Publicly Speaking

I recently spoke at the Chicago Graphic Design Club’s “Cold Style” event alongside a few fellow type lovers. Honored? Absolutely. Nervous? More than I expected. I’ve spoken in front of groups before, but this one felt more personal—more vulnerable. Maybe that’s why my stomach felt like it was full of rocks. I had rehearsed, knew my visuals, and told stories that were 100% mine—true and lived. I was "off book" and determined. Still, public speaking in a field literally built on communication can be oddly intimidating. I got through it, didn’t stumble much, and came away with new insight. If there’s one takeaway (amongst many) I’d share: give your audience a structured beginning, middle, and end—and leave them with something personal and true. A small insight or story they can carry with them. That way, no matter how nervous you are, you know you’ve given them something real. And honestly? I can’t wait to do it again.
