As an active member of the Chicago Graphic Design Club (CGDC), we are constantly pushing ourselves to dream up initiatives that spark curiosity, elevate overlooked talent, and build greater appreciation for the work happening in and around our creative community. We believe Chicago’s design scene—and the wider world that intersects with it—is full of extraordinary thinkers and makers whose output deserves both a spotlight and a platform, even (and especially) if it’s been flying under the radar. One recent outcome of that ambition is a small-but-mighty newsprint publication I developed, affectionately titled “PT.” The name nods to the point-size system that underpins typography and page design, but it’s also a wink—a reminder that even the most technical language in our field is rooted in craft, intention, and history. PT is dedicated to the type designers shaping the visual texture of our world. Each issue focuses on a single designer and one font from their library, unpacking the origin of the idea, the creative spark that set it in motion, the messy and marvelous production process, and the larger narrative of how that typeface ultimately came to exist. It’s a celebration of the human hands behind the letterforms. The zine is printed in unapologetic black and white—tabloid-sized pages, 12 in total—because newsprint feels honest, tactile, and immediate. It feels like a format that honors the work without distracting from it.
